How to Choose the Right Chandelier Size for Your Room (2026 Guide)
Choosing a chandelier is exciting — until you realise you have no idea what size to buy. Too small and it disappears into the ceiling. Too large and it swallows the room. This guide gives you the exact formulas and hanging heights our designers use, whether you are lighting a dining room, a foyer, a kitchen island or a bedroom.
What you'll learn:
- The 2-second formula for chandelier width
- A room-by-room size chart you can bookmark
- How high to hang a chandelier over a table or island
- How to adapt sizes for high or vaulted ceilings
- When two chandeliers beat one
The 2-second formula for chandelier size
Add the length and the width of your room in feet. The total is your chandelier's ideal width in inches.
Room length + room width = chandelier width (in inches)
So a 12 ft x 14 ft dining room (12 + 14 = 26) calls for a chandelier roughly 26 inches wide. This formula works for any room where the chandelier hangs alone in the centre.
If it hangs over a table, use the table instead
When a chandelier hangs above a dining table or kitchen island, the table matters more than the room. Follow these two rules:
- A chandelier should be about 12 inches narrower than the table it hangs over.
- It should illuminate the centre two-thirds of the table surface.
That means a 60 inch (5 ft) dining table works beautifully with a chandelier around 44–48 inches wide. A narrow table looks best under a compact pendant or a linear fixture rather than a wide circular chandelier.

Room-by-room chandelier size chart
| Space | Recommended width | Typical ceiling height |
|---|---|---|
| Dining room (over table) | 12 inches narrower than the table; 22–30\" for most tables | 8–9 ft |
| Kitchen island | One pendant per 2 ft of island width, or a linear fixture 12\" narrower than the island | 8–10 ft |
| Entry foyer | Room length + width, in inches (can go 10–20% larger) | 9–20 ft |
| Living room | Room length + width, in inches | 8–12 ft |
| Bedroom (over bed) | Half to two-thirds the width of the bed | 8–9 ft |
| Stairwell or two-storey foyer | 1/3 of the floor area width; hang so it is visible from the second floor | 16–22 ft |
How high should you hang a chandelier?

Height mistakes are more common than size mistakes — and easier to fix with a chain or a downrod before you install.
Above a dining table
Hang the bottom of the chandelier 30 to 34 inches above the table surface. With an 8 ft ceiling, 32 inches is a safe, comfortable choice: low enough to feel intimate, high enough that nobody bumps their head when standing up.

Above a kitchen island
Use the same 30 to 34 inch rule. If the island is used for food prep rather than dining, lean toward 34–36 inches for extra working clearance.

In a foyer or hallway
Keep at least 6 ft 6 in of clearance from the floor so people can walk under it. In a two-storey foyer, the fixture should sit so it is clearly visible from the upstairs landing. Browse our foyer and hallway lighting for tall-entry options.

In a bedroom
Hang 30 to 34 inches above the foot of the bed, or centre it over the room if you prefer the chandelier to be the room's main feature rather than a bedside light source.
What if my ceiling is higher than 8 feet?
Add height as your ceiling rises. A simple rule: for every foot of ceiling above 8 ft, raise the chandelier about 3 inches above the standard hanging height. A 12 ft ceiling above a dining table therefore works well with the bottom of the fixture around 42 inches above the table.
Higher ceilings also allow — and usually need — a larger fixture. In rooms over 12 ft, size up by about 10–20% from the formula result, then check the visual weight against the rest of the room. If the fixture looks lost, add one size rather than lowering it too far.
One chandelier or two?
For tables longer than about 8 ft, a single wide chandelier can feel heavy. Two or three smaller matching pendants hung in a row usually look better and light the table far more evenly.
A useful rule: divide the table length by the number of fixtures, then leave roughly 24–30 inches between them. Three 12 inch pendants over a 9 ft table, for example, read as one elegant line of light rather than a single oversized statement piece.

How to match the style to your room
Size and height are technical decisions. Style is a design decision — and the best approach is to decide whether the chandelier is the lead or the supporting act in the room.
- Room with strong architecture (panelling, exposed beams, a statement fireplace): choose something classic and elegant that complements rather than competes.
- Spare, modern room: a crystal or sculptural fixture can add the drama the room is missing.
- Warm traditional room: brass or antique-gold frames, candle-style bulbs and curved arms feel at home.
- Open-plan space: keep finishes consistent with your hardware (kitchen taps, cabinet pulls) so the lighting reads as part of one design. Explore our kitchen lighting to match an island scheme.
When in doubt, match the chandelier to the metaphor you want for the room: a crystal chandelier over a dining table says celebration; a clean linear pendant over an island says everyday practicality.
Bulbs, dimming and ceiling support
Three details that are easy to forget until installation day:
- Bulbs: avoid very high wattage bulbs directly overhead — they create heat and glare on the table below. Warm-white LED bulbs in the 2700–3000K range flatter both food and faces.
- Dimming: almost any chandelier can be dimmed with the right dimmer switch. A dimmer is the single cheapest upgrade to a dining room's evening atmosphere.
- Support: most small to mid-sized chandeliers mount to a standard ceiling junction box. Fixtures over roughly 50 lb require additional ceiling support — check before you buy, and use a licensed electrician for anything you are unsure about.
Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier for a 12x14 dining room?
Add 12 + 14 to get 26, so look for a chandelier around 26 inches wide. If it hangs over a 5 ft table, keep it under about 48 inches so it does not overhang the table edges.
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
30 to 34 inches from the table surface to the lowest point of the fixture. With an 8 ft ceiling, 32 inches is ideal.
Can a chandelier be too big for a room?
Yes. A fixture wider than the table beneath it, or one that dominates more than about a third of the room's width, will feel heavy regardless of how beautiful it is.
Do I need a special ceiling box for a chandelier?
Not for most small and mid-sized fixtures. Anything over roughly 50 lb needs extra support, and high-ceiling installations are best handled by a licensed electrician.
How do I clean and maintain a crystal chandelier?
Dust it every few weeks with a soft brush, and give it a deeper clean about once a year using a mild solution and lint-free cloths. Keep the bulbs cool and clean — dirty bulbs dull the whole fixture.
